Isis Initiates Broad Phase 2 Program of ISIS-EIF4ERx in Cancer

Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ISIS) announced the initiation of two Phase 2 studies of ISIS-EIF4ERx in patients with non-small cell lung cancer and prostate cancer. These studies are part of Isis' broad Phase 2 development program designed to evaluate ISIS-EIF4ERx in multiple types of cancer. ISIS-EIF4ERx targets eukaryotic initiation factor-4E (eIF-4E), a traditionally "undruggable" target that is thought to promote tumor growth and metastasis in many cancers.

Avodart Reviewed by FDA Advisory Committee for Prostate Cancer Risk Reduction

GlaxoSmithKline today announced the results of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee (ODAC) meeting to discuss the supplemental New Drug Application (sNDA) for Avodart® (dutasteride) for reducing the risk of prostate cancer in men at risk for the disease, defined as those who have had a prior negative biopsy due to clinical concern and have an elevated serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA). When asked if the dutasteride risk/benefit profile is favorable for reduction in the risk of prostate cancer in this target population, the ODAC voted 14 against, 2 in favor, and 2 abstentions.

Medivation and Astellas Complete Enrollment in Phase 3 Affirm Trial of MDV3100 in Advanced Prostate Cancer

Medivation, Inc. and Astellas Pharma Inc. today announced that patient enrollment was completed on November 15, 2010 in the Phase 3 AFFIRM study of the investigational drug MDV3100, a novel, triple-acting oral androgen receptor antagonist, in patients with advanced prostate cancer who have previously been treated with chemotherapy.

Bicalutamide and RO4929097 in Treating Patients With Previously Treated Prostate Cancer

Androgens can cause the growth of prostate cancer cells. Antihormone therapy, such as bicalutamide, may lessen the amount of androgens made by the body. RO4929097 may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Giving bicalutamide together with RO4929097 may be an effective treatment for prostate cancer.
